Sacramento’s about to say a collective “bottoms up,” as Midtown Cocktail Week officially kicks off today. We say “officially” because a couple of pre-event “pop ups” took place Tuesday night, including a tequila class at Zocalo with Julio Bermejo - the official U.S. tequila ambassador - and a karaoke-themed cocktail competition at Shady Lady.
Tonight’s main event is a cocktail competition dubbed “The Big Show” which runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at LowBrau. The competition started Aug. 12 at Shady Lady, where 20 bartenders showed off their best Genever gin cocktails and the top seven will compete in the final round tonight. Yours truly will serve on tonight’s judging panel, which includes Neyah White of Suntory whisky and Martin Cate, owner of San Francisco’s Smuggler’s Cove. A “people’s choice” pick will also be awared.
Other quick Midtown Cocktail Week picks include a Japanese-themed soiree on Thursday at Hook & Ladder and a seminar with David Wondrich, arguably the premiere author of spirits-related books and articles, at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Citizen Hotel.
Stay tuned for a Midtown Cocktail Week competition wrap-up and more.
