Top of Folsom brings bites and sips to historic district

We’re familiar with rooftop dining, but the second annual Top of Folsom will take it to the next level, so to speak.

Fifteen restaurants, 15 wineries and five craft breweries will join 20 juried fine artists and 10 performance artists on the rooftop of the four-story brick parking building in Historic Folsom for a bash to remember.

There, guests can sample bites, wines and beers while perusing paintings, photographs, sculptures, ceramics and hand-crafted furniture (for sale), all under a (hopefully) starry sky and against a backdrop of live music and other entertainment. Docents from the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary will be on hand with a menagerie of animals, suitable for petting. And a bonus: great views.

Humor and drama are guaranteed when Karen Holmes of Karen’s Bakery Café in Folsom creates a crowd-size dessert by tossing the ingredients for an enormous hot fudge sundae off the roof of the building to the next level below.

Should we expect a mess?

“No, but we’ll have a big tarp laid down just in case,” she said on the phone this morning

How does she plan to pull off this outrageous “ice cream social”?

“I will have the ingredients up there with me, and a group of culinary students will be waiting on the below,” she explained on the phone this morning. “I will (pour out) four three-gallon tubs of chocolate ice cream, three three-gallon tubs of vanilla and one three-gallon tub of strawberry. They’ll land in an oversized galvanized-steel ‘ice cream bowl’ below. I’ll do the same thing with caramel sauce, hot fudge, toasted nuts and — instead of maraschino cherries — French prune plums. After I finish throwing everything off the roof, the culinary students will do a ‘21 can salute’ with whipped cream on top of the sundae. Last year, I made a giant salad the same way.”

It will be a tough act to follow, but Sonoma metal sculptor Rolf Samulewicz will try as he finishes welding together a whimsical windmill of bears, cougars and wolves, which will be donated to the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary.

Among the participating restaurants will be Sutter Street Steakhouse, Waterboy, One Speed and Source Tapas. Wineries will include Madroña, Petra, Renwood, Schug and Titus. Craft beers will be poured by American River Brewing Co., Auburn Alehouse, Lockdown Brewery, Loomis Basin Brewing Co. and Mraz Brewing Co.

Top of Folsom will be 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 14 on the roof of the parking structure at Leidesdorff and Reading streets in Historic Folsom; free valet parking. Tickets are $75 in advance, $85 at the door. For tickets and more information: www.topoffolsom.com, (916) 985-2665, (916) 221-0994.
