Three noteworthy restaurants opening in Sacramento

If the recent spate of high-profile restaurant closures has left you feeling gloomy about the local restaurant scene, today marks the start of some good news.
Highly anticipated Block Butcher Bar is the next installment from LowBrau, the super popular craft beer bar and sausage spot in midtown. Block, opening today at 5 p.m., is headed by chef Michael Tuohy (formerly of Grange) who will combine his fine dining background with his love of butchering and charcuterie to create a food experience heavily focused on meat. But vegetarians won’t be overlooked.
Tuohy will oversee the kitchens at both Block and LowBrau next door. Whereas LowBrau is known for its large and intelligently curated beer lists, Block will focus on whiskey and related spirits, along with house-made bitters.
Block and LowBrau are owned by Clay Nutting and Michael Hargis. Find them at the corner of 20th and K streets at the MARRS project.
There’s more positive trending 11 blocks down the grid at the second coming of Blackbird, now called Blackbird Kitchen + Beer Gallery (1015 9th St.). Blackbird created a stir when it closed suddenly last fall, and many fans were upset that the owners informed staff about the bad news via a group email.
Owner/chef Carina Lampkin has new partners and a new concept, with a similar seafood-heavy menu but with a major emphasis on craft beer.
Blackbird will sport 50 tap handles featuring beer and cider. This revamping could make this stylish spot a major player in the very hot local craft beer game.
According to the restaurant’s website, it is primed for its “soft opening” Wednesday.
Then there’s Plan B, the second location for the restaurant near the intersection of Fair Oaks Boulevard and Watt Avenue. If you’ve been keeping up with midtown construction, you’ve probably noticed all the work being down at the former Capital Dawg (1226 20 St.) According to Plan B’s website, the new cafe, with extended late night hours, was set to open March 3. But the restaurant has already quietly opened.
