California’s Slow Food leaders will converge on Sacramento next week — and the public is invited to join them at two events.
Tickets are almost sold out for a 3:30 p.m. reception March 30 at Magpie Café for Alfonso Rocha Robles, Slow Food International’s counselor for Mexico and Central America. Robles is world renown for his work with heirloom blue corn and some of this flavorful grain will be featured on the reception’s menu.
According to Slow Food USA governor Charity Kenyon, the reception will be limited to 80 guests. Tickets are $30 apiece and available through Event Brite at this link. The afternoon menu of appetizers promises to reflect some of the crops Slow Food is working to preserve. Magpie Café is located at 1409 R St., Sacramento.
“Learn how Magpie Café owners Ed Roehr and Janel Inouye have embraced the Slow Food Biodiversity Foundation's Ark of Taste Project protecting traditional foods and food cultures at risk of extinction,” Kenyon said of the reception.

“We’re really excited to have Alfonso,” she added. “He’s bringing some of his indigenous blue corn for the Magpie reception, which is special.”
Loaded with more than 1,500 products so far, the Ark of Taste spotlights fruits, vegetables, animal breeds, cheeses, breads, sweets, cured meats and other foods that play important roles in various cultural heritages.
Meeting with international experts at this Sacramento conference, leaders from 35 Slow Food chapters will discuss ways to work together across international boundaries in the promotion and protection of heirloom food. They’ll also focus on community outreach and programs that help connect more people with good, clean, fair food such as community and school gardens.
What is Slow Food and where is it going is part of a new documentary, “The Slow Food Story,” which will be screened free to the public on Saturday, March 29 at 5 p.m. Hosted by Slow Food Sacramento as part of the conference, the free public screening will be held at the historic Guild Theater, 2828 35th St., just off Broadway. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. The screening is in cooperation with the Sacramento Food Film Festival.
