Movies on the menu at Sac Food Film Fest

Sacramento Food Film Festival features seven movies, most paired with inspired meals or appetizers.

Dinner and a movie? Why not make dinner the subject of the movie?

Why stop at dinner? Put the whole menu (and libations, too) on the big screen along with food for thought. That’s part of what you’ll find this during the third annual Sacramento Food Film Festival, which kicks off Thursday.

Through March 30, the festival focuses on food-related documentaries as well as other food-themed films. To spice up the mix, festival organizers recruited several local chefs and restaurants to create the perfect pairings of real food with film counterparts.

For example, “Sweet Sexy Ocean” — a documentary about sea urchin harvesting — will be shown at 4 p.m. March 30 at Sunh Fish (19th and V Streets in midtown Sacramento) accompanied by a sushi and uni tasting hosted by chef Bill Ngo from Kru. Tickets for that screening are $35.

In all, seven films will be screened including two offered free to the public: “Cafeteria Man” (on school meal programs, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 26) and “The Slow Food Story” (5 p.m. Saturday, March 29). Both will be screened at the Guild Theater, 2828 35th St., Sacramento.

On Thursday’s opening night, the award-winning “Spinning Plates” (about life inside three very different restaurants) will be served at 6 p.m. with appetizers at Ten22, 1022 Second St. in Old Sacramento. Guests will also receive a swag bag. Tickets are $40 including beer and wine.

At 4 p.m. Saturday, “Beer Wars” will be shown at the Sterling Hotel with bites by chef Adam Pechal, Freeport Bakery’s soft pretzels, cheese, popcorn and Ruhstaller’s new Nugget beer made with locally grown hops. Tickets for that film are $20.

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Lucca will serve a four-course dinner inspired by “Bottle Shock,” based on the true story of “the judgement of Paris” and Napa Valley’s historic break-through chardonnay. Tickets for the memorable dinner-movie combo are $40.

For the whole family, Sellands will serve up spaghetti dinner at 6 p.m. Friday, March 28, at Clunie Center in McKinley Park to accompany the animated comedy, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.” Adult tickets are $25; children, $15.
