Sampino’s Comida del Pueblo, the Mexican restaurant that adjoins Sampino’s Towne Foods, has been closed since late April. The good news is it’s expected to reopen in early August, said Michael Sampino. He’s the co-ower of Sampino’s deli, with his wife, Gabriela Fabbri, and his father, Bill Sampino.
“We’re remodeling it and revamping the menu,” said Michael Sampino. “My wife is in Mexico right now, looking for a chef. The first one didn’t work out and she ended up doing all the cooking. She got busier and busier, until we finally decided we needed to (regroup).”
The restaurant opened in October, specializing in authentic south-of-the-border cuisine from family recipes, served fast-food style. Fabbri, who is half Spanish and half Italian, spent months developing the menu, and the tiny place was a hit from the start. Dishes included grilled chicken, picadillo (seasoned ground beef), quesadillas, tamales, tostadas and flautas, along with 16 combination plates.
It was Fabbri who came up with the idea for the Mexican fast-food concept. “This is totally her baby and she gets offended if I offer my ideas,” Michael Sampino said.
