Sacramento’s Doughbot to turn off its deep fryers in early August

Doughbot, Sacramento’s cutting-edge artisanal doughnut shop, will close its doors at the end of the business day Aug. 3, husband-wife co-owners Bryan Widener and Dana O’Donnell announced on Facebook on Saturday morning.

“Bryan and I have (hustled) … for the past three years,” O’Donnell wrote in a post. “We’ve worked with amazing local folks (and) it’s impossible to put into words the gratitude we feel for this community. As rewarding as these last few years have been, they’ve also been incredibly difficult. We’re simply burned out.”

O’Donnell phoned to expand on her posted message.

“The burnout was most of the reason, but there were other parts of (the decision to close),” she said. “Our lease is up in September. We weren’t sure the building would make it through another winter, and we didn’t have enough money to move into a new location. That was hanging over our heads, compounded by the stress of running the business solely by ourselves.”

What about the near future? “We don’t have anything solid mapped out yet. We’re keeping our options open and waiting to see what comes along,” O’Donnell said. “We’re going to sell the equipment after we close. Bryan would like to write a cookbook, but it hasn’t been a priority.”

“Being self-employed is such a stressful and intense experience, so we’re both looking forward to not having so much responsibility,” she said. “We’re going to take a nice vacation.”

Doughbot is a favorite of Sacramento-area doughnut cognoscenti, who have made the small shop, located near Southside Park, a destination since it opened in 2011. Its glass cases, full of doughnuts with such unique flavors as bacon-maple and blueberry-cornmeal, are regularly emptied by its enthusiastic customers. Its motto is, “Resistance Is Futile.”

In April 2013, Doughbot won the “Donut Showdown” competition sponsored by Food Network Canada, beating out some of America’s biggest doughnut shops in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. The episode aired last October in the U.S. on the Cooking Channel.

Meanwhile, Doughbot is at 2226 10th St., Sacramento; (916) 444-5157, Hours are 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. (“or until we sell out”) Wednesdays through Sundays.
