No Sacramento Republic FC game is complete without a march into the stadium by the Tower Bridge Battalion, the most ardent supporters of Sacramento’s new soccer team. They show up waving flags and decked in Sacramento Republic FC gear, and perhaps fueled by a pint or two, before marching into the stadium and chanting, “Glory, glory, Sacramento!”
Track 7 Brewing Co., located across Sutterville Road from Hughes Stadium, was the Tower Bridge Battalion’s traditional meeting place for tailgating and gathering for the march. But with Sacramento Republic FC moving into new stadium digs at Cal Expo’s Bonney Field starting Friday, and not much in the way of neighboring businesses to hoist some pre-game pints, some local soccer supporters wondered how the march would be maintained.
But there’s good news for members of the Tower Bridge Battalion. Hussong’s Cantina, an on-site watering hole and Mexican restaurant, will serve as the new meeting place for the Tower Bridge Battalion march. Once gathered before the game, the dark maroon wearing masses will make the quarter-mile or so march from Hussong’s Cantina to Bonney Field. This on-site pub will be open exclusively for members of the Tower Bridge Battalion starting at 4:30 p.m. on game days.
Hussong’s Cantina is named after the purported birthplace of the margarita in Baja California, and sells more than 22,000 margaritas during an annual State Fair run. Craft beers, an integral part of the Sacramento soccer menu, will also be offered but the exact brands have yet to be finalized. Hussong’s Cantina is otherwise only open during the State Fair.
Never miss a local story.
Ovations Food Service, which oversees the food and beverage programs at Cal Expo, is also working with local food trucks including Wicked ‘Wich to help feed hungry soccer fans at Bonney Field itself. Ovations also ran the food program at Hughes Stadium for Sacramento Republic FC matches.
Get those marching shoes ready once again, for Sacramento Republic FC takes on Colorado Rapids Reserves on Friday at the debut of Bonney Field.
“The march has certainly become a part of the whole Republic FC brand,” said Mark Stone, regional vice president for Ovations. “We’re excited to be carrying that excitement and passion from Hughes Stadium to Cal Expo.”
