The 700 block of K Street is starting to take shape, with two anchor restaurants set to open in August. El Rey, an eatery that specializes in Mexican street food, will open on Aug. 11 at 711 K Street. A week later, on Aug. 18, the Irish pub Malt & Mash will debut at 715 K St.
The two restaurants are housed in the ground floor of the Oschner Building, which was built in 1895. A third restaurant, which has yet to be announced, will complete the 14,000-square-foot development. The eateries are poised to capture foot traffic coming to and from the Golden 1 Center at 547 L St., which will open Oct. 4 with a sold-out concert by Paul McCartney.
The three eateries are overseen by Trevor Shults, the restaurateur behind Crawdads on the River and Barwest. Shults also owns the downtown Sacramento nightclubs Vanguard 1415 and Social.
The city of Sacramento spent a decade trying to revive a stretch of properties on the 700 block of K Street. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in March 2015 to commemorate a $55 million project – a mix of public and private money – for the 700 block that calls for 137 units of housing among a mix of retail projects.
The restaurants will employ 120 people, owners said. Preliminary menus from El Rey and Malt & Mash will be available in the coming weeks.
