Empress Tavern’s honey hot fried chicken – crunchy and sweet outside and buttermilk-soaked salty/tangy in its always juicy interior – made my annual list of 10 best local dishes when it debuted in 2015. I have ordered it at every available opportunity since. But not as often as I liked, since it required rounding up enough chicken seekers to share a $90 family-style order for four, with a salad and two sides – the only way the chicken came.
Now, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights, Empress is offering a $40 deal for two people that includes a whole chicken, butter-lettuce salad, a side (we recommend the whipped potatoes) and two drinks (a draft beer or wine by the glass).
$40 (limit: one order per table), Mondays-Wednesdays, 1013 K St. (downstairs), Sacramento, 916-662-7694, www.empresstavern.com
