It was a large and enthusiastic crowd of beer lovers that showed up for the the Brewers Showcase at the California Auto Museum. Tickets were $40, which gave participants a souvenir cup and access to all of the beer poured by the all-local lineup of breweries.
All of the big names were there, including Berryessa, Knee Deep, Sudwerk, Mraz and more. Insiders crowded the Mraz table, aware that a special saison beer would be served at precisely 7 p.m.
New Helvetia served a special IPA tied to the mural project for the Sunday farmers market. Knee Deep liked its collaboration with Deep River so much that it decided to make it a permanent part of its lineup.
There were no clear standout trends in evidence at the Showcase, though there clearly was a clamoring for Belgian-style saisons, barrel-aged and sour beers. IPAs are still in big demand, but the styles are clearly expanding and the ever more sophisticated beer consumer is demanding more variety.
Sacramento Beer Week runs from tonight through March 8 with the Capitol Beer Fest on the Capitol Mall downtown. For information about all of the events during this celebration of craft beer, visit Sacbeerweek.com.
