The California Supreme Court could decide as early as today two huge legal issues related to Proposition 8. That's the ballot initiative with which a majority of voters changed the California Constitution to eliminate same-sex marriage.

In responding to climate change, California can't just lead on efforts to reduce greenhouse gases. As a state that is already vulnerable to floods and droughts, it must be ready to adapt to ever more extreme forces that a warming world will unleash.

Virtually all of America's financial and political artillery has been dragooned into the great task of heading off a recession. This is exactly the wrong way to go. As painful as it will be in the short run, a recession is just what we need.

Re "K Street plan faces new snag" (Our Region, Nov. 16): So it appears that Joe Zeiden is backing out of his proposal for the 700 block of K Street? Is this surprising? Not really. These absentee landlords do not have a strong enough commitment to Sacramento to stick with a project. When the going gets tough, they just go away.

Driving home from work after dark a couple of weeks ago, I was just about to turn left off a busy commercial street near my house when I spied, out of the black, a cyclist coming at me from the opposite direction.
