• Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The 17th annual gala themed "Passport to a Cure – Spain" will be from 6 to 10 p.m. April 13 at the Sheraton Grand Hotel, 1230 J St. In the honoree spotlight will be Rob Lynch, president and CEO of VSP Global, who will be honored for his efforts on behalf of children and others with type 1 diabetes. The gala will acknowledge more than a decade of VSP employee contributions of volunteer time and the raising of more than $500,000 to benefit JDRF. Rob Stewart of KVIE's "Rob on the Road" will be emcee. The gala includes formal dinner, wine tasting, music and a live auction. One special addition is the Fund a Cure portion of the program offering guests an opportunity to fund research grants going directly to diabetes research. "Spring Surge 2013" is on the calendar for March 22 at Arden Hills Resort Club & Spa with party hours from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Mark Kreidler will be emcee for the event featuring fine wines, food – sweet and savory – and fashion show by FS (Felicia Strati), Patrick James and the Wardrobe. Sister Bridget McCarthy from Dignity Health will be recognized as the 2013 safety net hero.
