Kings game a test for Stockton

Published: Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008 - 12:00 am | Page 3C

The Kings will make future stops in Stockton if the team's Oct. 15 exhibition game sells as planned.

Pacific athletic director Lynn King said Wednesday he hopes the Central Valley shows its support by attending the game against the Los Angeles Clippers at Spanos Center.

"Our goal with this is not one-and-out," King said at a news conference at Spanos Center. "We want them back."

Kings coach Reggie Theus said he would be open to having the team's training camp in Stockton, as the organization did in the mid-1990s.

King and Dan Chapman, the president of the Stockton Thunder and Stockton Lightning, said they hope the exhibition game sells well enough to merit moving future contests to the larger Stockton Arena, which seats 10,000. Spanos Center's capacity is 6,150.

Tickets went on sale Wednesday, with prices ranging from $10 to $125.

"I'm happy to take this short road trip here," Theus said. "This is a big basketball area."

Geoff-isms – Theus said Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie should use analogies more often. While discussing the Ron Artest trade last week, Petrie painted a picture of the dilemma Artest presented.

"You know, if you have a big shade tree, shade's good to a point," Petrie said Thursday. "But if there's too much shade, then the grass doesn't get to grow."

Theus said that's a great analogy.

"This is an opportunity for growth," Theus added.

Bobby's back – The Kings will officially reintroduce Bobby Jackson at a 1 p.m. news conference today. Jackson returned to the Kings as part of the Artest trade after stints with Memphis, New Orleans and Houston.

Jackson will wear the same No. 24 jersey he wore during his first tenure in Sacramento.

Theus said he had a good talk with Jackson recently and looks forward to what he brings to the Kings.

"We always talk about leadership on this team – or lack thereof," Theus said. "And Bobby brings that."
