Officials dedicate plaza to deputy slain in 2014 rampage

A plaza honoring slain Sacramento County sheriff's Deputy Danny Oliver was dedicated Saturday at Eastern Oak Park in Carmichael.

The ceremony at the new Mission Oaks Recreation and Parks District park drew about 250 onlookers, including county Supervisor Susan Peters and Sheriff Scott Jones. A Sheriff's Department honor guard unveiled a bronze plaque honoring the deputy.

Oliver was one of two area deputies killed during an Oct. 24, 2014, rampage by Luis Bracamontes, who was convicted earlier this month. The jury returns to court in March to decide whether Bracamontes should face the death penalty.

His wife, Janelle Monroy, was convicted in the killing of Placer sheriff's Detective Michael Davis Jr. and could be sentenced to 25 years to life when she returns to court March 23. Monroy was not accused of pulling the trigger, but a separate jury found she helped her husband during the crime spree.

The slayings of Oliver and Davis spawned national outrage after President Trump seized upon the crimes as an example of problems created by illegal immigration. Luis Bracamontes is a Mexican citizen who had been deported several times and was in the United States illegally at the time of his crime spree.
