An all-day hike Saturday in the mountains may be just the way to welcome spring. Putting hiking boots to trail is Mike Brandt of the Mother Lode chapter of the Sierra Club. He will lead the eight-mile walk around Jenkinson Lake at Sly Park Recreation Area. Though it's a fairly flat course, it sits at 3,500 feet elevation. The site is just south of Highway 50 near Pollock Pines.
The trail meanders through the pine forest along the shore. Hikers can expect to walk at a moderate-to-brisk pace, according to Brandt. Hikers also can anticipate sharing the popular trail with bicyclists.
The 640-acre reservoir was formed in the mid-1950s to provide water for Placerville and nearby communities. Its earthen dam, part of the Central Valley Project, holds back Sly Park Creek, a tributary of the South Fork of the American River.
Hikers should wear comfortable walking shoes and bring cash for car pool drivers, lunch, water, hat and sunscreen. The group will meet to form car pools at 8 a.m. Saturday at the El Dorado Hills Park & Ride on the northeast corner of White Rock and Latrobe roads. It's right off Highway 50. Reservations are required. For more information: (916) 933-0708.
