Weekend Watch: Fine, festive weather and clear roads

Published: Friday, Nov. 21, 2008 - 9:02 am

Cool, crisp conditions, clear roadways and a smattering of events are in this weekend's forecast.

Sunny skies will warm the Sacramento region to about 70 degrees today, with northwest breeze of 5 to 11 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Saturday and Sunday will be similarly pleasant, with highs in the mid- to upper 60s, said Tom Dang, a Weather Service meteorologist.

There is a slight chance of rain up in the Shasta County mountains Saturday, but otherwise it "looks to be good through the weekend," he said.

The weather likely will shift early next week as low pressure from the Gulf of Alaska drops into the region.

"If it pans out, there's a pretty good chance of rain," Dang said.

Leaving town? Getting to your destination likely will be as pleasant as the weather.

There are no construction projects scheduled for Interstates 5 or I-80, nor on Highways 99, 16, 160, 49 and 89 this weekend.

Some delays could slow traffic on Highway 50 in Placerville because of construction, but there's a silver lining: It's the last weekend of the project.

The east- and westbound connectors of Highway 50 to north- and southbound Highway 49 will be closed from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. until Monday, according to Caltrans.

The highway also is closed from Ray Lawyer to Clay streets, at Canal Street and at Bedford Avenue from 9 o'clock tonight to 7 a.m. Saturday and from 8 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday. The construction is scheduled to be complete by Wednesday, Caltrans reports.

Detours are available.

And there are a few family-friendly events to choose from this weekend as well.

Citrus-seekers can get their fill of mandarins and mandarin-loaded foods and goods at the 15th annual Mountain Mandarin Festival in Auburn.

The festival offers cooking demonstrations, entertainment, food and crafts as well as the succulent fruit, which boasts a synephrine-packed punch.

A recent U.S. Department of Agriculture study confirmed that Placer County's Owari Satsuma mandarins contain up to a large amount of synephrine, a natural antihistamine that alleviates cold and allergy symptoms.

The mandarin festival will be from noon to 5 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Gold Country Fairgrounds, 1273 High St., Auburn.

Admission today is $1 for people 16 and older. Admission Saturday and Sunday is $5 for 16 and older, $3 for seniors. Parking is $5, and some street parking is available.

Looking for holiday festivities? The Fountains at Roseville is launching its holiday entertainment today, which includes a fountain show choreographed to holiday music and other free performances and activities.

And for Thanksgiving and holiday-themed arts and crafts, head to the 2008 Sacramento Harvest Festival at Cal Expo. The festival will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $9 for adults, $7 for seniors 62 and older and $4 for teens 13 to 17. Children 12 and under are free. Tickets are good all three days.
