AAA sees small drop in Thanksgiving travel

Published: Friday, Nov. 21, 2008 - 10:29 am

The economic downturn will take a small bit out of Californians' Thanksgiving travel plans, according to AAA.

AAA today predicted that more than 5.1 Californians will travel more than 50 miles from home over the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday weekend, a 2.3 percent decline from the 2007 holiday.

Officials of AAA suggested that that family ties will override the budget concerns of many.

"Even as Californians struggle with issues related to the affordability of travel, Thanksgiving is a time when a great deal of emphasis is placed on visiting relatives and friends," said AAA spokeswoman Cynthia Harris. "Many view this as a time to create memories, reconnect with loved ones and continue past traditions."

Low gas prices also might help boost travel numbers, Harris said.

On Thursday, AAA said nationwide travel over the Thanksgiving holiday will drop for the first time in six years due to the economic slowdown and fewer airline flights.

The travel club said 41 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home, down slightly from 41.6 million last year.
