A hot dog eating contest is scheduled for noon today in midtown Sacramento. Contestants will be eating hot dogs at Capitol Dawg restaurant near 20th and L streets to raise money for Shriner's Hospitals for Children.
Capitol Dawg owner Michael Brown came up with the idea of a hot dog eating contest with Sacramento area resident Petri Hawkins Byrd, the actor who plays the bailiff on the "Judge Judy" television show.
The goal is to have fun and raise money for Shriners, the Oak Park hospital that provides specialized pediatric care to children with orthopedic conditions, spinal cord injuries and burns.
For $10, contestants get a chance to win prizes based on their ability to eat as many hot dogs as possible in seven minutes. All proceeds benefit the hospital but contestants get a free gift card and a t-shirt, minus the mustard.
Byrd will be on hand to oversee the event at Capitol Dawg, 1226 20th St.
