The El Dorado Irrigation District announced that it is monitoring fish populations in Caples Creek, following emergency repairs at Caples Lake that required deviations from required stream flows.
In mid-November, employees of the irrigation district, California Department of Fish and Game, and the U.S. Forest Service, along with volunteers from Trout Unlimited, conducted a fisheries survey of Caples Creek, according to a district news release.
"Crews used backpack electrofishing units and dip nets to capture fish during the survey," Brian Deason, the district's senior hydroelectric compliance specialist, said in the news release. "Fish were identified, measured and weighed before being released back into the stream."
Deason said a follow-up survey will be conducted next year after the return of normal minimum streamflows specified under the district's federal license for its hydroelectric operations.
The drawdown of Caples Lake, off Highway 88 in Alpine County, began in July after the district discovered damage to gates that controlled releases from the lake's main dam. Repairs were completed this fall and the lake is refilling.
More than 26,300 fish were rescued during the drawdown and transferred to nearby lakes.
