Sprinkles are dampening the Sacramento region but likely won't give way to significant showers today.
Scattered light rain is forecast today as a weak low-pressure system moves into the area, said Johnnie Powell, a National Weather Service forecaster. Less than one-tenth of an inch of rain is expected, he said.
As often happens during the winter season in the Sacramento region, high pressure will settle in following the weather system.
What does high pressure do?
"It just keeps the rain away," he said. "It sends storms up to a rainy place called Oregon."
High temperatures today will hover around 49 degrees in Sacramento.
A slight chance of snow is possible in the Sierra Nevada, mainly before 10 a.m., and chain controls already are in effect on Highway 50 from Twin Bridges to Meyers, according to Caltrans' Web site.
Weather for the rest of the work week should be relatively mild. Partly cloudy skies and highs in the mid 50s are expected until Thursday, when another weak low-pressure system brings a slight chance of rain.
"It's pretty nice for early January," Powell said.
The weekend is forecast to be dry with high temperatures possibly reaching the low 60s, he said.
