Valley cools as thunderstorms rock the Sierra

Published: Friday, May. 29, 2009 - 7:21 am

Mild temperatures are forecast for the coast, the mountains and the Sacramento Valley, but the National Weather Service is warning hikers, campers and anglers in the Sierra Nevada to watch out for thunderstorms that could cause the creeks to rise to hazardous levels.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue this afternoon and evening over the northern Sierra, forecasters predict. The thunderstorms could dump heavy rain, producing a rapid rise in smaller creeks.

"Looks like another active day in the mountains," said George Cline, a weather service meteorologist in Sacramento.

The threat of thunderstorms will linger through the weekend in the mountains. In a special weather statement, forecasters advise hikers to seek shelter on higher ground during a downpour and remind campers to make sure their campsites are away from waterways and dry canyon creekbeds.

In addition, forecasters warn, even though the skies are clear in the immediate vicinity, a big downpour miles away can fill streams, leading to flash floods some distance from the thunderstorm.

Boaters are urged to seek safe harbor if lightning and thunder erupts over alpine lakes.

"Anyone traveling in the mountains should be aware of the chance of thunderstorms, hail, heavy rain, localized flash flooding," Cline said.

While big clouds bump and flash in the hills, cooling is expected in the Sacramento area. The Delta breeze has returned and should drop today's high temperature to 87 degrees, about the same high as the rest of the weekend, forecasters say.

In the Bay Area, temperatures in the 60s with sunny afternoons are forecast for the weekend.

June begins Monday with temperatures in Sacramento a bit below normal. Temperatures will continue to recede early next week with Monday expected to see 83 degrees, Tuesday 81.
