A former Yolo County sheriff's deputy died in an auto accident on Highway 16 in the Capay Valley on Thursday just before noon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Robert Charles Wion, 61, of Brooks, died when his 2001 Toyota Corolla collided head-on with a sports utility vehicle driven by ThomasPrentice, 67, of Sutter Creek.
CHP officer Phil Gruidl told the Woodland Daily Democrat that the vehicles hit each other on their front left sides. They were each traveling at about 55 mph, which is the posted speed limit on that stretch of the rural highway.
Gruidl said the accident occurred just north of CR-71. Wion's Corolla was traveling west on Highway 16, while Prentice was traveling east. Gruidl also said there was no indication that alcohol was involved in the crash. Both motorists were wearing seatbelts.
