Fires started late Saturday by lightning strikes forced the closure of portions of two major roadways Tuesday in Shasta and Lassen counties.
Officials closed Highway 44 from five miles west of Highway 89 in Shasta County to the junction of Highway 36 near Susanville in Lassen County. Highway 89 is closed from Highway 44 to Highway 299E, said Michael Mayor, Caltrans District 2 spokesman.
The Hatcreek Complex of fires is burning in Lassen National Forest. The 2,000-acre Sugarloaf Fire, with zero percent containment, jumped Highway 89 on Tuesday about one mile north of Old Station. An evacuation advisory is in effect. The 1,000-acre Brown Fire also is burning along Highway 89, said Jeff Fontana, Susanville Interagency Fire Center spokesman.
In eastern Shasta County, the SHU Lightning Complex has burned 7,249 acres in the mountainous area near Burney, a Cal Fire spokeswoman said.
