Yuba County to get funding for final levee repairs

Published: Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009 - 11:38 am

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced today that Yuba County will receive another $47.5 million in state bond money to finish levee repairs in the Plumas Lake basin.

The money comes from Proposition 1E, a $5 billion flood-control bond measure approved by California voters in 2007. The funding announced today will allow the Three Rivers Levee Improvement Authority to repair levees on the upper Yuba River, upstream of the town of Olivehurst.

The levee authority previously received $138.5 million from Proposition 1E to move six miles of levee along the Feather River farther back from the river. It is the largest levee setback project in state history, and will remove a flood-inducing restriction on the river while also providing about 1,600 acres of new riverside wildlife habitat. Construction is expected to be finished Monday.

Levee repairs on the Yuba River will include seepage berms and slurry walls to control leakage through and under the levee. This work is the last of four phases of construction, totaling $405 million, intended to protect the Plumas Lake basin from 200-year floods.

Both the Yuba and Feather river repairs require the levee authority to contribute 30 percent of the construction cost from local funds. For the Yuba River project, local funds add another $20 million for a total project cost of $68 million.
