What: The California State Fair
When: Opens Aug. 15, runs through Labor Day, Sept. 1; hours noon to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Labor Day; $10 general admission, $8 seniors 62-plus, $6 children 5-12, free for children younger than 5. The fairgrounds is on Exposition Boulevard.

Big exhibit: "Magic of the Movies," featuring special effects, sound editors, the original Oscar statuette, Herbie from "The Love Bug," autograph sessions and even casting calls for Hollywood movies.
Featured volunteer: Hiroko Ninomiya received the Western Fairs Association Blue Ribbon award at a California Exposition & State Fair board of directors meeting in May.
Ninomiya said: "I have volunteered on behalf of the Japanese community for more than 20 years. There is a sense of continuity."
She started setting up the Japanese exhibit in Building 7 on Wednesday, in anticipation of Friday's opening.
An academically trained artist, Ninomiya will teach fairgoers calligraphy and origami. With Ninomiya's help and talent as an origami artist, 1,000 cranes of peace have been collected every year since 1982 for the Hiroshima Peace Park in Japan.
