San Francisco is the slow-food epicenter this weekend as host to Slow Food Nation '08.
WHEN: Friday through Monday
WHERE: Civic Center Plaza (Polk and McAllister streets, San Francisco) and Fort Mason Center (Marina Boulevard and Buchanan Street, San Francisco)
ON THE MENU: The Fort Mason Center will host "taste pavilions" featuring artisanal pizzas, bread, ice cream, pickles, cheese, chocolate, beer, wine and much more. Tastings run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. $45-$65.
ALSO FOR SALE: A farmers market at the Civic Center Plaza will host produce from California and around the world, as well as food vendors. Organizers ask customers to bring their own tote bags or used paper/plastic bags. This market is open to the public and runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
EXHIBITS/LEARNING: Check out the Slow Food Nation Victory Garden, an urban garden nestled in Civic Center Plaza.
A variety of speakers will cover topics including food policy and politics, climate change and the overall philosophy of the Slow Food movement. Visit www.slowfoodnation.org for locations and times of speaker sessions.
ACTIVITIES: "Slow dinners" will be held around San Francisco from Thursday through Monday. Participating restaurants include Delfina (3621 18th St.), Foreign Cinema (2534 Mission St.) and Jardinere (300 Grove St.).
Take a "slow hike" through the Sonoma Baylands, the Tennessee Valley trailhead and other spots around the Bay Area.
Get your groove on to Slow Food Rocks, an outdoor music festival at the Fort Mason Center on Saturday and Sunday. Artists include Ozomatli, Gnarls Barkley, Phil Lesh and more.
