VOLUNTEER PROFILE

What: The 14th annual California Brewers Festival, presented by the Rotary Club of Point West.

When and where: From 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Discovery Park; $25 until Saturday via www.calbrewfest.org, $30 at the event; $5 for designated drivers and ages 12-21.

On tap: More than 120 microbrews will be available for tasting. Ticketholders get 10 tokens, with additional tokens available to buy.

Major beneficiary: Assistance League of Sacramento. The league supports many community projects, including Operation School Bell.

About Point West Rotary: The largest club in District 5180 with 162 members, Point West raised $115,000 during the 2007-08 term for programs at Encina High School, Jonas Salk Middle School and the Assistance League.

Featured volunteer: Carol Howenstein moved to Sacramento from Marin County and did not waste any time getting involved. "I met a couple of docents on a Governor's Mansion tour and they invited me to join," said Howenstein. When not involved with Brewfest, Howenstein is one of the daily managers at the league's thrift shop, Second Season, 2528 Yorktown Drive. One project is Operation School Bell. "We receive referrals from schools and either take the children shopping or supply school uniforms," said Howenstein.

UPCOMING EVENTS

• Friends of Light Rail & Transit. The 21st anniversary celebration will be from 6 to 8 p.m. next Thursday at the historic Globe Mills, 1131 C St., Sacramento. The Globe is being developed into high-density senior and market-rate housing units with ground-floor retail, located one block from a light-rail station. • Orangevale Rotary Club. "Just a Little Bit of Country" will be from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday at Divine Savior Church parish hall, Greenback Lane and Filbert Avenue. Paul Robins of Fox40 will be the guest auctioneer. Tickets are $35, available at Orangevale Copy, 9267 Greenback Lane; (916) 989-5653.

• Mercey Springs Foundation. The Arts and Wine Festival will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Precision Cabinetry & Design, 11225 Trade Center Drive, Rancho Cordova. Pop and cultural art from around the world will be presented, along with international food and beverages. Mercey Springs was formed in 2004 to partner with existing charitable organizations to meet their goals. Tickets are $25; (916) 686-5116 or www.merceysprings.org.

• Rotary Club of Cameron Park and Soroptimist of Cameron Park. The 19th annual Show 'n' Shine display of cars and airplanes will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Cameron Park Airpark. Look for Black Hawk and Cal Star helicopters, plus search-and-rescue information, food from breakfast to burgers, a bounce house, beer and wine, vendor booths and the Ponderosa High School band at 10 a.m. Admission is free; parking is $3.
