IN THEIR TRACKS
Revisit the ill-fated journey of the Donner Party during a guided hike presented by the Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce.
Six morning hikes will be offered Oct. 4, from moderate to strenuous levels of difficulty. The interpretive hike will take participants through the events of the Donner Party and focus on the growth of the area's ice and timber industries, and the importance of the transcontinental railroad in shaping the Sierra.
The hikes will be followed by a barbecue and presentation by author-historian Mark McLaughlin. The hikes begin and end at Sugar Bowl Lodge, Highway 40 off the Soda Springs exit. Registration is 7:30-9 a.m. Cost is $45.
A more leisurely guided walk at the Donner Party encampment site and a visit to the Emigrant Trail Museum will be offered Oct. 5. The walks begin at 9 a.m. at the Donner Camp Picnic Area off Highway 89. Cost is $10.
