Shopping For Answers: Discontinued items disappoint buyers

Published: Sunday, Jul. 5, 2009 - 12:00 am | Page 6I

DEAR SHOPPING: I am allergic to many scents, so I use fragrance-free products. Most moisturizers are too heavy and cause my face to break out. I have used Clinique skin-care products for close to 30 years. I particularly liked Moisture on Demand and Moisture on Call. They were light and left my face feeling refreshed. Recently, Clinique replaced these products with Youth Surge SPF 15 Age Decelerating Moisturizer. Unfortunately, the product feels like sunscreen and they seem to have left out the moisturizer. I am comfortable with my age and just want to be comfortable with the skin I'm in. Can you recommend another brand I can try?

– Crystal in Lincoln

DEAR CRYSTAL: I got several requests for Clinique products, so I contacted the company for help answering the questions. Here are two more inquiries from readers and Clinique's suggestions – plus some of my own.

• From Hulene in Roseville: I have used Clinique's tube of creamy Tinge 105 Soft Heather eye shadow for some time, but it has been discontinued. It is difficult to find a similar creamy shade without shimmer. What would you recommend that is close?

• From Shirley in Sacramento: I've been using Clinique lipsticks in Super Berry and Plum Jam. Much to my disappointment, both shades have been discontinued. Can you help me find something similar?

Christine Sforzo of Clinique's global communications department came up with these suggestions for products within her company's line.

For Crystal, she suggests the Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief and Moisture In Line. "They both are light and non-greasy," she says.

My suggestions are either Avon's Anew Advanced All-In-One Max lotion or cream with SPF 15 or Olay's Total Effects Daily Moisturizer.

For Hulene, Sforzo believes you're referring to Clinique's Touch Tint in Soft Heather.

"We recently discontinued this line and substituted it with Quick Eyes Cream Shadow," she says. "It's a light, velvety cream shadow that glides on easily. And it stays crease-proof for up to 10 hours. The colors are a little pearly but not shimmery."

She adds that if you don't want any shimmer or pearl, consider the Colour Surge Eye Shadow Stay Matte collection.

And, for Shirley, Sforzo recommends Clinique's new High Impact Lip Colour SPF 15 – something in the violet color family. "After Party is a gorgeous color and the SPF formula protects the lips from sun exposure," she adds.

DEAR SHOPPING: I'm hoping you can help me. I recently went on vacation with a friend who got me hooked on Tussy Cream Deodorant. She lives in San Diego and says she can sometimes find it at Longs/CVS. I have looked at multiple stores – as well as online – and can not find any. I really love it and would like to know if you can help me find it in Sacramento or the surrounding area.

– Olivia, Sacramento

DEAR OLIVIA: I love Tussy and used to use the same cream formula years ago when it was carried by the former Revco drugstore chain. It is available online (a 1.7-oz. three-pack) for $7.19 at Amazon.com and also at www.thefind.com in a variety of price points and sizes. Note that last August the Rhode Island-based CVS chain acquired Longs Drugs and is opening stores in Northern California – most still operating as Longs Drugs. For example, the Longs store at 1701 K St. is receiving CVS stock but not the Tussy deodorant – yet. So keep checking. Also, CVS.com sells the 1.7-ounce jar of Tussy Cream Deodorant for $2.19.

DEAR SHOPPING: Please help! Several co-workers and I have been searching in vain for slacks that are suitable for work (and also casual capris, shorts) with a natural waist. All we can find are the low-cut, uncomfortable "muffin top" styles. Recently, I received a catalog from Chadwicks featuring one style of natural-waist pants. When I called to order, all the colors in my size were gone.

– Donna, Roseville

DEAR DONNA: I suggest checking out J.Jill, which is in the Galleria at Roseville. I spoke with an assistant manager who says most of the pant styles there are at or slightly below the waistline. And I've ordered bottoms (mostly cropped pants and shorts) from the company and they're very comfortable, especially anything in linen or from the Wearever Collection. The store is offering an additional 25 percent off already-reduced merchandise – both in store and online at www.jjill.com.
