Staff at the Sacramento Zoo are mourning the death of Urban, their 28-year-old male Sumatran orangutan.
The primate had been a staple at the zoo since he was born, the offspring of two longtime residents of the park.
Urban, described as a "true ambassador for his species" in a release, had shared his living space with a number of female companions through much of his adult life.
The primate died Wednesday evening after a weeks-long bout with a neuromuscular disease that weakened his legs and made him lethargic.
