White Noise Festival

WHAT: Local world music, hip-hop, pop, funk, soul, jazz and ska performers convene for an ambitious night of collaboration split among three venues. Over at Old Ironsides, James Levi, the Harley White Orchestra, Daisy Spot and the CV Dub headline the night; at the Java Lounge, it's the Antennae Trio with Hammond, and the Capitol Garage All-Stars; and at the Distillery, check out the likes of DJ Epik, Chuck Taylor and Random Abilities.

WHAT: This sung-through musical tells the story of a relationship forward and backward – at the same time. She sings in the present tense, looking back in disillusion at a courtship and marriage that didn't work out; he sings from the other end, starting at the beginning. Claire McKnight and Chris Plank star in this Lambda Players production.

San Francisco Opera's 'Bonesetter's Daughter'

WHAT: World premiere of Amy Tan's adaptation of her best-selling novel. Tan's libretto plumbs the troubles of a Chinese American woman who learns the horrible secrets of her immigrant mother's past. Composer Stewart Wallace interweaves Chinese music with Western opera for a cast that includes mezzo-soprano Zheng Cao, and one of China's biggest opera stars, Qian Yi.
