Merced College Community Services will be holding bus trips in November and December. From 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 23, the trip will be to Treasure Island Flea Market; the cost is $70 per person. From 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 6, the trip will be Christmas shopping at Union Square; the cost is $75 per person. The fee pays for transportation, refreshments and entrance to the event. As part of Geography Awareness Week, the city of Merced is holding an open house GIS Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 19, in the Sam Pipes Room at the Merced Civic Center. The event will feature GIS demonstrations by city departments, the Merced Irrigation District, Merced County Association of Governments, UC Merced SpARC Center and Merced Visitors Center. This event is open to the public. There will also be a map gallery on display the entire month of November in the first-floor lobby of the Civic Center.
A pancake breakfast is scheduled from 7 a.m. to noon Dec. 8 at McSwain School, 922 N. Scott Road. The pancake breakfast is a 50-year tradition in which students raise money for outdoor education at Camp Calvin Crest. Their goal is to raise $26,200 to pay for 101 students to attend camp. The students will be serving pancakes, eggs and sausage. Santa will spread Christmas joy and photos will be available. There will be baked and homemade goods for sale. Enjoy wonderful prizes from the gift raffle. The fifth-grade class will also be selling locally grown poinsettias for $12 each.
