A 21-year-old man was taken into custody Thursday evening after a pursuit with law enforcement in the Atwater area, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The incident was reported about 10:30 p.m. near Franklin Road and Southern Pacific Avenue, according to Officer Moises Onsurez.

Merced County Sheriff’s Deputy Christopher Chilton tried to make a vehicle stop on two men, one riding a motorcycle, the other on an ATV, because they passed through a stop sign, Onsurez said.

A short pursuit ensued. The deputy’s patrol car was side-by-side with the motorcyclist, who turned down a dirt path. The ATV driver, who was behind the motorcyclist, tried to follow him, but crashed into the right side of the deputy’s patrol vehicle, Onsurez said.

The motorcyclist escaped, but the ATV suffered a flat tire due to the crash. The operator of the ATV, identified as Alex Renee Cardona of Sacramento, was not hurt.

CHP responded to the scene, and officers determined Cardona was driving under the influence. He was booked at the Merced County Jail for an outstanding warrant and the suspected DUI.

The crash remains under investigation.
