The Merced College Retired Women will meet for their monthly luncheon at 11:30 a.m. today at La Hacienda 2, 3355 G St. The no-host luncheon is an opportunity to visit with retired friends and keep informed about coming events and happenings at Merced College.
Atwater Chamber mixer
The Atwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its Diamond Mixer and Atwater Aviators event at 6:30 p.m. today at Memorial Ball Park, 790 Elm Ave. in Atwater. Adults are $3 and children are free. Hot dogs are two for $3. Ballgame begins at 7 p.m.
Independence from Hunger food drive
Merced Grocery Outlet, 1125 W. Main St., is holding its third annual Independence from Hunger food drive. The store is encouraging customers to donate food and cash to support Merced Catholic Charities’ anti-poverty campaign. Participants can look for specially marked foods that Catholic Charities has identified as needed by local families. The items can be purchased and put in a collection bin at the front of the store. The Horatio Alger Cortopassi Family Foundation is offering vocational scholarships for community college students. Students can receive $2,500 per semester up to a maximum of $10,000. Applicants must live in Merced, Stanislaus, Madera or San Joaquin counties; be no older than 25; demonstrate financial need with a financial aid award letter; and be a high school graduate or have a GED. Nightclub two-step dance classes will be held on Thursdays for six weeks, beginning July 24 in the ballroom at the Senior Community Center. Beginners class will be held from 7 to 7:45 p.m., and the intermediate class will be from 8 to 8:45 p.m. $25 for six weeks or $5 per class, plus a $1 per class supply fee. Discussion of military funeral honors
will host Soldiers from the California Veteran Honors Program will discuss military funeral honors at 11:30 a.m. July 18 to at The Hampshire, an independent senior living community, 3460 R St.. The purpose of the event is to formally educate the public, funeral providers and veterans organizations on military funeral honors, benefits, entitlements, regulations and protocol.
