Lorenzo Smith, currently associate dean and professor at the School of Engineering and Computer Science at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., has been appointed dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Sacramento State.

He assumes his new duties on Aug. 1.

Frederika Harmsen, provost and vice president for academic affairs at California State University, Sacramento, said Smith “brings more than two decades of outstanding experience in higher education and industry.” Smith’s background includes strategic planning, fund raising, budget management, student support initiatives and community and international partnerships, she said. He was selected after a nationwide search for dean candidates.

Smith joined Oakland University’s faculty in 2000 and has won multiple teaching awards. He earned his doctorate in engineering mechanics from Michigan State University.

Ramzi Mahmood, who has been serving as interim dean of the CSUS College of Engineering and Computer Science, will become the full-time director of the CSUS Office of Water Programs.
