No late-night tax return mailing in Sacramento this year

Don’t wait until midnight to mail state and federal tax returns because there will be nobody at Sacramento post offices to receive the documents this year.

No post offices will be open late tonight in the Sacramento area. In years past, cars filed by post offices where postal workers would accept income tax returns right up to the last minute on April 15.

April 15 is the last day to file federal tax returns without a penalty. However, the declining number of people filing with paper returns has caused the United States Postal Service to end the late night service.

Tonight, the post office at 3775 Industrial Blvd. in West Sacramento will be open until 5 p.m. The last pickup from a mailbox will be 9 p.m. at that location. Last year, postal workers there collected mail from customers in cars outside until midnight.

The last pickup tonight from a box at the Sacramento Main Post Office, 2000 Royal Oaks Drive, will be at 6 p.m.
