Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today:
Foggy in spots: While downtown Sacramento was clear, the morning commute into the city was foggy, according to the National Weather Service. Patchy, dense fog is likely Wednesday where clouds have bumped up against Sierra foothills. Use caution, the weather service advises. Fog is expected to clear by 10 a.m. High today in Sacramento: 67 degrees.
A vote for streetcars: Sacramento’s effort to bring streetcars back to downtown got a major boost Tuesday night when property owners near the proposed line voted to kick in $30 million in construction funds.
High-altitude scofflaws: The Foresthill Bridge in the Placer County foothills, long a thrill-seekers’ magnet, was invaded again this weekend – this time by what officials are calling “girder hangers.” Attracted by boasts on Twitter, dozens of young people made their way to the bridge in the hills above Auburn to illegally climb onto the 730-foot-high span’s narrow metal catwalk. Some of them scaled the walkway’s railing to walk tightrope-like on exposed girders, Placer County sheriff’s officials said, and some reportedly lowered themselves beneath the girders to hang by their hands.
Signs of improvement: Sacramento County has drafted a new plan for signs on the American River Parkway. The goal is to reduce clutter and send clearer messages to parkway users, including that they should pick up after their dogs.
Capital tour: In a whirlwind first day in Sacramento, new Kings coach George Karl lunched with his new bosses, toured the new downtown arena while wearing a Kings-purple hard hat and held a late-afternoon meeting with the ticket-sales staff. He vowed to increase the energy both within the team and in the city.
