Open house for college centennial
Sacramento City College celebrates its centennial milestone with an open house expected to draw up to 5,000 community members and another 1,000 high school students. The event will feature concerts, chemistry demonstrations, sports clinics, campus tours, vintage cars and the opening of a 25-year-old time capsule. Centennial festivities began in August with art shows, performances and a footrace. Saturday’s open house runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the college, 3835 Freeport Blvd. More events are planned through the academic year, including an anthropology exhibit, concerts, archival displays and vaudeville shows. Ceremony honors firefighters
The California Firefighters Memorial Ceremony honors the memory of 29 state firefighters, adding their names to more than 1,300 inscribed on the memorial in Capitol Park in Sacramento. Gov. Jerry Brown is scheduled to be among the dignitaries participating in the ceremony, scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The public is invited to attend as there will be a uniformed firefighter procession, flag presentations to families of the honorees and the traditional “Last Alarm” bell-ringing ceremony.

Local elections forums scheduled
Live local election forums are planned beginning at 9 a.m. in the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors Chamber, 700 H St., Room 1450. The forums, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Sacramento County and the Sacramento Metropolitan Cable Television Commission, will be cablecast live on Metro Cable 14 and webcast at www.sacmetrocable.tv. Scheduled forums: 9 a.m. – Elk Grove mayoral race; 10:30 a.m. – Elk Grove City Council, Districts 1 and 3 races; 11:45 a.m. – Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, District 4 race; 12:45 p.m – Folsom City Council race; 2 p.m. – Galt City Council race; 3 p.m. – Rancho Cordova City Council race. Open house at Fire Station 56
Station 56 of the Sacramento Fire Department will host a free open house for residents from 2 to 4 p.m. at 3720 47th Ave. in south Sacramento. Visitors can meet firefighters and medics, tour the station, and take a close look at the trucks, engines, ambulances, equipment and gear. The event is part of the Fire Station Open House series.
Health screenings planned
Walmart stores throughout the Sacramento area are offering free health screenings from noon to 4 p.m., part of a sweeping “Walmart Wellness Day” at more than 4,600 stores nationwide. Attendees can receive free blood glucose, blood pressure and vision screenings. Various health product samples will be available, as well as information on health insurance options. Immunizations will be offered at in-store pharmacies.
