Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today:
Mixed Holy Week weather: The weather should be good for outdoor events marking Good Friday, the day when Christians honor the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Roman Catholics will walk between Stations of the Cross downtown from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., starting at Crocker Park. Today’s weather is expected to be sunny with a high of 76 degrees in Sacramento. But Easter Sunday looks showery.
If weather permits: Plan ahead, but watch the weather. Cloud cover might ruin Sacramento’s view of a total lunar eclipse early Saturday. The total eclipse, sometimes known as a “blood moon” because the full moon appears reddish-orange, will last about five minutes beginning at 4:57 a.m.
Campaign for justice: The parents of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student whose brutal murder in 1998 helped transform the nation’s perception of gays and lesbians and their struggle for equal rights, brought their campaign for justice to Sacramento.
Back-Seat Driver: In his weekly column, The Bee’s Tony Bizjak tackles two classic Sacramento transportation questions: “If downtown parking is so bad, how come no one parks in the lots under the W/X freeway?” And, on weekends, “Where the heck did that ‘fun run’ or street festival come from, the one now blocking my way?”
Port delivery: The Port of West Sacramento is receiving its first cement import in five years. Port officials and city leaders see the shipment as a sign of the rebounding economy. Cement is headed to the downtown Sacramento arena project and other destinations.
