Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today, Friday, April 8, 2015:
Perfect pedaling weather: Today will be chilly for women riders up in the Sierra. However, by the time the men of the Amgen Tour of California start riding on Sunday in Sacramento the weather should be great for bicyclists and spectators. The high temperature is expected to be 81 degrees with a slight breeze on Sunday afternoon.
Cyclists around the region: The 2015 Amgen Tour of California swings through the state – and Sacramento – beginning today, showcasing top men and women cyclists in their own races.The women’s event, four stages that includes an invitational time trial, begins today around and near Lake Tahoe. The men’s and women’s events converge Sunday in Sacramento. That’s when the first stage of the men’s race begins at the Capitol (it also will finish there 126.2 miles later) and Stage 3 of the women’s race is contested on a 2-mile circuit around the Capitol following the men’s departure.
Suspect back in court: Charles Ewers, the Carmichael father of two accused of trying to kill his children and then himself during a custody visit is scheduled to appear today in Sacramento Superior Court at 8:30 a.m. Ewers, 38, is being held without bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and felony child endangerment after, officials said, he locked himself and his children, ages 8 and 10, in a car in his garage and let the exhaust fumes seep into the vehicle on April 4.

Attention, North Natomas motorists: The Sacramento Police Department will be conducting a sobriety and driver license checkpoint tonight on Del Paso Road near Five Star Way in North Natomas. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. and run for five to seven hours. Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment with officers checking drivers for proper licensing.
Free downtown concert: Zyah Belle & the Funkshun will be the featured perormer at today’s free concert at Cesar Chavez Plaza, part of the Friday Night Concerts in the Park series. The will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. at 910 I St. in Sacramento.

College softball – Big Sky Conference tournament: Sacramento State vs. Weber State, 9 a.m. in Pocatello, Idaho. Thursday’s game between the Hornets and Wildcats was postponed with Weber State leading the Hornets 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Today’s game will resume at that point.
