Enjoy the warm temperatures for a couple more days in the Sacramento area, as a cold front will move in mid-week dropping overnight lows to below freezing temperatures.
“The cold low-pressure system will have a bigger impact, as it will be significantly colder than we have gotten used to in the last several weeks,” said Tom Dang, forecast meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento.
Sunday and Monday will be pleasant, with highs in the mid-60s, and lows in the 40s. However, a cold front from Canada will start moving in Monday night, bringing a 20 percent chance of showers overnight in Sacramento and possibly 2 to 5 inches of snow in the higher Sierra.
“Cold fronts can bring precipitation but this is a pretty dry system, with the moisture out of the Gulf of Alaska, which is not very moist,” said Dang.
Never miss a local story.
However, as the system moves through the Sacramento area Tuesday, the winds will pick up, making for a breezy, dry day, with highs near normal, in the mid-50s. But the overnight will see freezing temperatures, around 32 degrees.
“In terms of precautions, bring in your sensitive vegetation, and cover up your plants,” said Dang. “Think about your pets. If they’re outdoors at night, bring them in.”
It will be sunny for the rest of the week, but the cold air will stick around, giving the Sacramento area a taste of early winter weather.
The daytime highs on Wednesday to be around 50 degrees, slightly below normal, but that night will be the coldest of the week, with below freezing temperatures. The low is expected to plummet to 29 degrees, matching the record low set for the date in 2009.
Bundle up on Thursday if you plan to be out and about, as the highs are expected to only reach the upper 40s, and lows in the upper 20s.
Friday will see a slight warming during the day, with the high creeping back to the lower 50s, and the low to inch back up to the freezing temperatures.
“It will be far colder than normal for a couple of days and nights,” said Dang.
The normal high for December is 58 degrees, with the normal low about 40 degrees.
