The radiant smiles of children lit up the night after they received scooters or skateboards at a Dec. 14 Christmas party hosted by Friends-CARE. The nonprofit organization provides services, educational workshops, support and resources for children and families of the incarcerated. The children’s wishes were fulfilled, thanks to the generosity of Book of Dreams readers.
Your donations also helped purchase specialized wheelchairs that look like race cars for pediatric units at three hospitals – Sutter Children’s Center, Sacramento, Sutter Memorial Hospital and the UC Davis Children’s Hospital. The wheelchairs were sought by Angels for Hearts, a family-run nonprofit that works with area hospitals to provide gifts to pediatric heart patients up to age 18, to aid in their recovery and to lift their spirits during the holiday season.
From Nov. 27 to Saturday, The Bee has shared with you 13 stories of good people in need. Your response during the annual holiday charity drive was again uplifting. To date, the Book of Dreams has raised more than $162,000 in donations. Readers can continue to donate using the form in today’s Bee or online at www.sacbee.com/bookofdreams.
Contributions will be accepted until Jan. 17. All money raised will be used to fund the 13 dreams. Any remaining funds will go to nonprofit organizations that work with children and families. None of the money will be spent on administrative costs.
Never miss a local story.
