Hot August days return to the Sacramento area this weekend, the mercury should rise to near 100 degrees today and 102 Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
Wreath-laying ceremony honors WWII vets

The Sacramento Valley National Cemetery is hosting a public wreath-laying ceremony at 10 a.m. as part of the World War II 70th anniversary commemorative weekend. Wreaths honor WWII veterans interred at the cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon.
DUI checkpoint in Sacramento County
The East Sacramento Area office of the California Highway Patrol is conducting a sobriety checkpoint from 10 p.m. today to 2 a.m. Sunday somewhere within the unincorporated area of Sacramento County.
Sactown Wings event downtown
The second Sactown Wings festival, dedicated to the consumption of chicken wings for charity, is planned from 3 to 7 p.m. at Cesar Chavez Plaza in downtown Sacramento.
Sacramento Taiko Dan performs anniversary concert
Sacramento Taiko Dan will present its 26th Anniversary Concert at the Sacramento City College Performing Arts Center, 3835 Freeport Blvd. There is an hourlong family matinee at 3 p.m. and a longer program that begins at 7 p.m.
Ice Cream Safari at Sacramento Zoo
The 31st annual Ice Cream Safari is planned from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Sacramento Zoo, Land Park Drive and Sutterville Road. There will be a face painting station, an ice cream dance party and live entertainment. All proceeds will benefit zoo general maintenance and animal care.

- The city of Sacramento District 4 hosts a free movie night at Two Rivers Park in North Natomas. “The Incredibles” is the featured film beginning at 8:30 p.m. at the park, 3166 Two Rivers Drive. Free popcorn, juice and water are available.
- Sacramento River Cats vs. Round Rock Express, 7:05 p.m., Raley Field, West Sacramento. It’s ’90s Night at the ballpark.
- Big Time Speedway is hosting the Golden State Speedway Series at 6 p.m. at the Prairie City OHV Park, 13300 White Rock Road, Rancho Cordova.
- A free Meet the Lancers kickoff event for the Cordova High School football teams is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. at Village Green Park, 3141 Bridgeway Drive, Rancho Cordova. A showing of the movie “When the Game Stands Tall” follows the ceremonies.
