Hotter weather today
Sacramento had its first 100-degree reading of the month on Tuesday when the mercury reached 101. There is no quick end to the triple digits. The National Weather Service predicts the heat wave will extend into Saturday. The high today is expected to reach 104 degrees.
Happy birthday, California
California celebrates its 165th birthday with a host of events at the secretary of state building, 1500 11th St., Sacramento. Secretary of State Alex Padilla and the California State Archives are hosting a rare public display of the original 1849 state constitution – the English and Spanish versions – from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Other activities include a reception featuring California’s birthday cake from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., a program with remarks by California Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye and Padilla at 4:15 p.m., free access to the California Museum’s exhibit on California statehood from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and free access to the State Archives’ new exhibit about the office of the California secretary of state from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Short-term rental review
Sacramento residents and businesses can discuss new rules for short-term rentals within private homes through websites such as AirBnB at a community meeting from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Sacramento City Hall lobby, 915 I St. Sacramento City Council members and staff seek to hear from the community about whether there should be regulations on the “home/room sharing” industry.
Film, music festival begins
The Sacramento Film and Music Festival begins a five-day run at the Jean Runyon Little Theater at the Memorial Auditorium, 1515 J St. The all-genre film festival showcases filmmaking from around the world and also fosters the creative works of local filmmakers.
