Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today:
Friday the 13th weather: This being Friday the 13th, luck is not with us in terms of breaking the drought. The National Weather Service is forecasting at least 7 days of dry skies in Northern California. A high of 72 degrees is forecast for Friday in Sacramento. So soak up the rays, and hope the stubborn high pressure system moves aside for some real rain-makers.
Hotel, condo design OK’d: A 16-story hotel and condo tower planned for the downtown Sacramento arena complex got the green light from the city’s Planning Commission on Thursday, a pivotal step that allows the Kings to begin construction of the project.
Placer campus: The University of Warwick in Coventry, England, says it plans to build a campus on 1,159 acres of Placer County land donated by a partnership led by developer Angelo K. Tsakopoulos.
Never miss a local story.
Helmets for all cyclists?: A California state senator introduced legislation this week that would require all bicyclists to wear helmets. State bicycling advocates wasted no time in saying they think that’s a bad idea, writes The Bee’s Tony Bizjak in his Back-Seat Driver column.
Free Starbucks every day: Starla Link of North Natomas holds a 10-karat gold Starbucks card engraved with her name that entitles her to one free Starbucks beverage or food item a day for the next 30 years. Link is one of 14 winners of the card worldwide as part of the company’s “It’s a Wonderful Card” promotion. Ten were awarded in the U.S., three in Canada and one in the U.K.
Karl in: The Sacramento Kings have announced that they have hired George Karl to replace Tyrone Corbin as head coach of the team. Karl, the sixth-winningest coach in NBA history with 1,131 career victories, will be the team’s third head coach this season. He is expected to coach his first game on Feb. 20 against the Boston Celtics at Sleep Train Arena.
▪ Poll question: What impact will George Karl’s hiring have on the Sacramento Kings?
