Two residents in wheelchairs and their caregivers escaped a North Highlands house fire on Friday that claimed the life of the homeowner’s cat.
The fire was reported around 7 a.m. at a home in the 6700 block of Thomas Drive, said Capt. Michelle Eidam of the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department. Crews arrived in less than three minutes and contained the blaze to a portion of the living quarters and attic, but damage from fire and smoke was estimated at $100,000.
Investigators determined the cause was electrical, officials said.
One of the residents, a man who uses a wheelchair, woke to the sound of a smoke alarm and cried out for help, Eidam said. Two caregivers in the home helped him and his mother, who also uses a wheelchair, escape unharmed. Unfortunately, the captain said, the owner’s cat perished.

Fire officials contacted the Red Cross to assist the displaced residents.
