The driver of a fire engine ran off the side of the Interstate 80 along the Yolo Causeway this morning when his rig suffered a tire blowout.
The accident occurred about 8:30 a.m. today when the firefighter driver was eastbound on I-80. A California Highway Patrol officer said that a tire apparently failed, sending the vehicle about 200 feet off the roadway where the causeway is not elevated by a bridge.
The fire engine was from the California Medical Facility in Vacaville and was not on a call, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The rig went off the freeway, down an embankment and ended up in a drainage canal. The driver suffered a minor injury.
Traffic was slowed across the causeway for several hours.
