A Sacramento Superior Court jury returned a first-degree murder conviction today against Daniel Marlan Weddle for the Dec. 1, 2011, shooting death of his wife, Margaret.

It took the panel about four hours to deliberate the case against the 50-year-old defendant who claimed he acted in a heat of passion in the killing of his 46-year-old wife who had just served him with divorce papers.

Weddle’s lawyer had asked the jury to find him guilty of voluntary manslaughter. The shooting took place in Margaret Weddle’s apartment in the 3600 block of Bellinger Court in North Highlands.

Judge Cheryl Chun Meegan scheduled Weddle’s sentencing for Dec. 20. He is facing a term of 50 years to life in prison.
