Placer County deputies say a package covered in birthday wrap belonging to two out-of-towners contained methamphetamine.

A drug-sniffing dog was brought in when Donald David Owen, 46, of Oakdale and Sarah Marie Bastin, 43, of Modesto, were pulled over Nov. 20 on Auburn Ravine Road for traffic violations. Owen was on “searchable probation,” allowing for police dog Jet to sniff around.

Deputies said Jet “alerted” on several items, including a box covered in birthday gift wrap. Inside the gift-wrapped box deputies said they found 2.29 pounds of meth in a large plastic bag.

Owen and Bastin were arrested on suspicion of sales and transportation of a controlled substance, plus conspiracy.
